چکیده

Permuted-block randomization with varying block sizes using SAS® Proc Plan Permuted-block randomization is often used in determining treatment assignments for clinical trials. This method allows flexibility in achieving balanced allocation of subjects among treatment groups and is further enhanced with increased randomness of the assignments by the use of varying block sizes. Chow and Liu (2004) illustrated the implementation of the permutedblock randomization with a fixed block size using the SAS PROC PLAN. This paper presents a modified version of their SAS program to implement the permuted-block randomization with varying block sizes. This program is simple to run and self-contained. Users can easily adapt the program to meet various design specifications, produce analytical statistics and present the generated randomization schedule in a desired format.

SUGI 27: Generating Randomization Schedules Using SAS(r) Programming

Randomization as a method of experimental control has been extensively used in clinical trials. Generating the randomization schedule has been an essential part of some trials. We discuss how to use SAS programming and SAS PROC PLAN to generate the randomization schedule. The issues related to randomization are also discussed. Case studies are used to illustrate the use of SAS programming and S...

Evaluation of imbalance in stratified blocked randomization: some remarks on the range of validity of the model by Hallstrom and Davis.

OBJECTIVES If in a clinical trial prognostic factors are known in advance, it is often recommended that randomization of patients should be stratified. The best-known method is permuted-block randomization within strata. But it suffers from the disadvantage that imbalance still occurs in the trial as a whole if there are a large number of strata, or/and the block sizes are too large for the num...

Concealing Block Sizes Is Not Sufficient

correctly noted that blocked randomiza-tion has a disadvantage that " the executer can predict the next assignment " and this is clearly incompatible with allocation concealment. So we can agree that permuted blocks with a fixed block size should never be used in ran-domized trials. 2) But what is the solution to this problem? Kim and Shin 1) indicated that " To solve this problem, the allocato...

Influence of selection bias on the test decision. A simulation study.

BACKGROUND Selection bias arises in clinical trials by reason of selective assignment of patients to treatment groups. Even in randomized clinical trials with allocation concealment this phenomenon can occur if future assignments can be predicted due to knowledge of former allocations. OBJECTIVES Considering unmasked randomized clinical trials with allocation concealment the impact of selecti...

Chronological bias in randomized clinical trials arising from different types of unobserved time trends.

BACKGROUND In clinical trials patients are commonly recruited sequentially over time incurring the risk of chronological bias due to (unobserved) time trends. To minimize the risk of chronological bias, a suitable randomization procedure should be chosen. OBJECTIVES Considering different time trend scenarios, we aim at a detailed evaluation of the extent of chronological bias under permuted b...
